THE IPAD AND BIBLE PRINTING

The following fanciful scenario begins thousands of years ago when man was living in caves and was writing on walls. One day Oreg the cave artist came rushing into his cave and said to Elag his wife, “Oh, no, guess what some Egyptian did, he invented papyrus, a material to write upon, and it’s portable; now no one will come by and see my picture writing!” “Elag, do you know what this means...were finished!”

A thousand years later we see Amenotep the papyrus maker in Egypt complaining to his wife Cleo, “This papyrus makers union strike is going to ruin us. There are people in Europe who have developed a smoother writing material called ‘parchment’...it’s going to put us out of business!”

Then in the late 15th century Algun the scribe came running up to his brother scribes in the scriptorium, moaning, “Oh, no, a German has invented a gizmo that will finish us!” The chief scribe said, “No way!” Then Algun said, “It’s going to make us obsolete...the gizmo is a ‘printing press’ and our scriptorium will no longer be needed...we better learn how to operate a printing press!” The chief scribe said, “Algun, we’ve been doing this for over a thousand years, nothing is going to change?”

Now in the year 2010 Steve the printer came running into his condo and said to his wife Mary, “Wow, the new iPad is going to make printing obsolete...no more trees to cut down, beavers are going to be saved, and spotted owls will be happy...e-ink or electronic paper is the reading media of the future!”

As there are only a few printing presses in the world that can print on THIN Bible paper, the future of these types of printed Bibles is precarious. People will still want to read a printed Bible, but whether or not the presses will be around for much longer is questionable. I recently purchased a new Apple iPad to see how the new “gizmo” handled The Apostolic Bible....wow! Every morning I take out my iPad to read the Word and to make annotations for a second edition. Below is a picture of the iPad running the app iAnnotate which allows one to highlight, draw lines, make notes and other things...some of which can be seen on the screen below.

The iPad is much closer to a book reading experience than a notebook or desktop monitor because it is thinner, has a sharp resolution, and the screen takes up most of the vision, rather like a book...that is, no keyboard, mouse, monitor, or desk. The Apostolic Bible PDF files look great on the iPad and the LXX & New Testament text is free to download.
