Nigerian Christians Slaughtered By MuslimsToday I read a story where 200-400 Nigerian Christians were killed by Muslims, not even a 4 day old baby was spared from the Muslims' machetes. (source). It is difficult to tell from the story if this was some kind of retaliation since the story does indicate that in January, 300 Muslims were killed. The story does not identify the killers of the Muslims. It could very well have been other Muslims. I am concerned though with this quote by a "Christian" pastor: "We have done our best to tell our members, 'don't go and attack Muslims, they are your brother...if they come to dislodge you in your place, stand to defend yourself.'"
As Christians we know Jesus said "all who live by the sword shall die by the sword" -- Mt 26:52. However Jesus seemed to imply that we are to defend ourselves to some degree when He instructed the apostles to take swords with them as they went out on the second leg of their missionary excursion. Lk 22:35-39 Further we are told that a person that does not take care of his own family is worse than an infidel. 1 Tim 5:8 Not to mention, Muslims are NOT the "brothers" of Christians -- this relativism makes faith in any religion pointless. I find it puzzling that we as Christians have gotten to the point where we see Jesus as almost an incarnation of a hippie, prancing around advocating non-violence. Certainly Jesus' message isn't like that of Islam where Muhammad instructed his followers to be bandits and murderers, but at the same time it doesn't appear Jesus expected Christians to always roll over. Turning the other cheek is not the same as "take ye swords". Christians in some of these 3rd-world situations may have been influenced by the fake lovey-dovey preaching of WoF movement preachers. Christianity need not be depicted as weak. After all, we're more than conquerors in Christ, taking all things captive for Christ. Why should Christians be terrorized by Muslims? Recall Cordoba! Let us not be afraid.
