Google Sketchup & Other Tools

SketchupSo, the company I work for is an International Logistics company -- we handle shipping cargo all around the world for huge clients.  My boss is trying to find an inexpensive way to create a virtual cargo/shipping container so that our warehouse can load a computerized model of the container before they attempt to load the actual.  There are loadplanner programs on the market but most cost a fortune.  We looked at Google's new SketchUp program -- it's FREE!

This is a free program & allows you to design 3D models, much like the old clunky CAD programs used to do, but this one is more intuitive...& fun!

The promo says:

Redecorate your living room. Design a new piece of furniture. Model your city for Google Earth. Create a skatepark for your hometown, then export an animation and share it on YouTube. There's no limit to what you can create with SketchUp.

There is, of course a PRO version for sale which no doubt will have more features but I plan to use the free version to redesign my "man-cave" room.

Also, before we started looking into this program, when I transferred to another dept in late 2008 I began to design Excel tools for the dept.

Included in these tools are:

  1. Date Reformatter (when date is in European vs US)
  2. Currency Converter (uses MSN Money upto date conversion)
  3. Mapping Function (uses Google & Yahoo maps)
  4. Unit Converter (various measurement/mass converters)
  5. And more

You will need to enable macros & refresh webdata (to make the MSN money work -- you will get a prompt).  Macro security should be at least medium for this to work.
