Week 2 - Why Are We Christians?

The obvious response to the question of Why we are Christians and other people are not is because we chose to be Christians.

Perhaps some people might answer the question by saying we are Christians because we follow Christian precepts and other people, for whatever reason do not.

I'd like to get into what the Bible says about why some people are Christians and others are not.

  1. John 10:3-4, John 10:27 (Ps 95:6-7) Sheep hear voice
  2. Mt 13:10-17 Why not make it plain?
  3. John 6:57-66 Only whom the Father grants will believe
  4. Romans 8:28-38 God's purpose to predestine and preserve some
  5. Eph 1:3-14 Chosen before the foundation of the world

We are not talking about "Calvinismi" but simply the fact that even though the Bible in some places calls people to believe, it also almost paradoxically says people can't believe unless granted by the Father; given ears to hear and eyes to see; are predestined to believe.

What then should be our response to our own salvation? How should we behave as Christians? Proud of our own accomplishment? Humbled that we were chosen without merit from us? (see 1 John 4:19)

FOLLOW UP SELF STUDY

  1. What is the difference between Monergism and Synergism?
  2. What are the proof-texts against God's election?
  3. What is perseverance of the saints/eternal security?

Your scriptural quotations

Your scriptural quotations have nothing to do with "choosing" but with being chosen. The activity belongs to the one calling, choosing, revealing.... even God's predestining, but certainly not our choosing. At very most, we are at a distant, distant, secondary level "choosers"--- but what an oversight it would be to emphasize our choosing.

Of Course

Hello guest, thanks for the comments. Perhaps the study notes weren't clear. I agree that the Bible is putting the emphasis on God's choosing, not ours. That was the point of the lesson. Thanks for affirming it.
